Another item I received for Christmas immediately took me back to my younger days as soon as I saw it; my mom gave me a Kitchen-Klatter cookbook from the early 70’s. Mom might not even realize how much Kitchen-Klatter is ingrained into my early memories, but she knows I like old cookbooks, so the gift fit.

Diggin’ out and checkin’ in
Oh, it’s been a busy couple of weeks! Semester tests occurred the last 3 days before Christmas break started, and then as the break grew closer, we in the Midwest became aware of a humungous snowstorm that was headed our way — the worst one in years, the chatter among the locals said. Indeed, as December 22 came upon us, it was painfully evident that yes, there was a storm on the way and that traveling might be a wee bit tricky. Freezing rain occurred on the 22nd, making things interesting right off the bat, but we knew more was coming. Lots more.

Owls . . . and other strange trends
I am continually fascinated by trends — why something is so hot and fashionable one moment only to be considered kitschy and dated the next. Understandably, we all want something different to spice up our everyday surroundings. But still, I wonder why some things were trends at all. The fashion trends I went through in elementary and middle school (but often didn’t partake in, thank goodness) are a perfect case in point. Continue reading “Owls . . . and other strange trends”
Sex, drugs, and . . . pots and pans?
You learn something every day. At least I do. Ok, I try. Whatever the case, I ran across something interesting when I was leafing through a 1950 edition of Better Homes & Gardens — a tiny little ad for Chore Girl.
Home Decorators Collection goes retro
Just received my new Home Decorators Collection catalog the other day, and although I planned to quickly leaf through it before throwing it away (lest anything tempt me during this season of low funds!), their new retro-style dessert plates and servingware caught my eye. I love these!
The Gap for Pilgrims? Hmmm…
After driving hundreds of miles around the Midwest since Thursday (Iowa to Minnesota to South Dakota and back again), and I am once again nestled into my little ranch house. The Christmas music plays in the background, the fireplace creates a warm glow, and the ‘net creates a lot of diversion for someone who should be doing some schoolwork. Oh, but I haven’t posted on here in a few days, so that too is giving me a great excuse not to think about school just yet.

‘Tis the season — almost
I put up the tree yesterday after practically sitting on my hands for weeks to fight the urge to do it earlier. I go through this struggle every year. In our small house, putting up the tree means shoving furniture around and having less space than we already do, so it’s not something I can do weeks earlier than I absolutely have to. Yeah, this is still early, but I also know if I don’t put up the tree and decorate the house now, it’ll never happen.

Be one with your decor
I often run across goofy decorating ideas in old magazines — and that in itself is the fun in reading them — but I think I’ve found one that takes the cake. Back in the ’80s, women everywhere were dressing according to their “season” — remember that? I was an autumn . . . actually a cross between an autumn and a winter. I even had a couple teachers in 6th grade who had a girlie bonding moment with my class by evaluating each girl for her “season.” We thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Evidently, Mother Nature is confused
It seems surreal to be sitting in my house on November 8th with all the windows open and the furnace off. And yes, I know what you’re thinking: why am I inside and not out there enjoying all of it? Oh, I have been — trust me. The boys and I went for a 3 1/2 hour walk through a nearby state park, walking the trails and doing boy things like digging in the stream and finding cool rocks. Imagine my shock when I reached into the stream and pulled out this little gem:

I see you searching . . .
I know it’s a bit cliche to do a post about the search strings people use to find a person’s site. But ya gotta admit — some of the ways people stumble upon a personal blog are amusing, and a bit disturbing. Today, in the absence of having anything more interesting to report or blog about, I will attempt to address and greet my somewhat wayward visitors. Continue reading “I see you searching . . .”
